Kids behave differently at school and at home. Parents worry, how should I get my child to behave.
Discipline is a Latin word ' disciplinare' - meaning ' to teach' . Ms Stephanie, a child care educationalist explains this in her posts 'A fine parent' : -
That discipline will never talk about punishment. Discipline is simply a way to guide and manage child behavior. Discipline is based on the quality of a child's relationship with the care provider that could be a teacher in class room, Mom and Dad at home. When child receives a continuous response from an adult, trust, deep attachment and sense of being 'wanted' develops. The key is that these relationships are respected, responsive and reciprocal.
Establishing a daily routine and frequent communication is vital in developing respect and meaningful relationships. This can also create more impact on child ability to develop.
Effective discipline is not about punishment. We can be personal with child and catch him when he does something good, by rewarding him or by acknowledging him before child runs up to us exclaiming his good act.
Attend him, when he greets you at any time, and reciprocate otherwise he will feel neglected and create a cycle of mistrust.
Avoid his comparison with other child, instead compare his progress with his past performance. Praise him with caring, natural tone as child can easily get the feel the blow of smoke. What we say and how we say has meaning to him. Be calm in all situations and do not yell. our modelling provides visual clues to what is acceptable and supports the appropriate way to act.
We need to give direct guidance and explain rules with reasons. Make it simple and positive in words- ' what to do' than 'what not to do'. e.g. Focus the child to ' walk on feet' and explain how walking keeps them from getting hurt, instead of saying ' don't run'.
Give child as much as time as possible, he takes time to change. Prevent bad behavior before it happens and support the child. We can easily change the TV/PC/Mobile on child lock or parental mode and avoid arguments.
These effective classroom techniques can be applied at home to discipline the child and will get positive results.
